Story from the Tunnel

Right I’m going to tell you now about Thomas Bourne. Thomas was the traffic regulator of the tunnel, and he started his job at the age of just 12. His job was, to every morning, open up the gates at Marsden, and let any boats wishing to travel through the tunnel in, before locking the gates and walking up and over the tops to Diggle side. He would then let the boats out, before letting the return traffic in, locking the gates, and walking back to Marsden. Now he would do this, 4 times a day, 7 days a week, 364 days of the year. His only day off…Christmas day. He did this for 37yrs! In those 37 yrs if you take his daily mileage into account, he will have walked in his career, about 215, 842 miles, which is about 8.6 times round the equator or 90% of the way to the moon! So not that far really!
